Europe is home to 45 sovereign countries with a combined population of about 739,836,661 people—roughly 9% of the world total—and a total land area of about 23,055,343 km² (8,901,717 sq mi), some 17% of the world’s land. Its most populous nation is Russia (around 146,028,325 people), while the least populous is Vatican City.
The largest country in Europe by area is Russia at about 17,098,246 km², and the smallest is Vatican City at about 0.49 km². Of the 45 countries, 15 are landlocked and 2 are island nations with no land borders. The continent is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.
On average each country in Europe covers about 512,341 km² and is home to about 16,440,815 people, though the real spread is wide. The three most populous—Russia, Germany and United Kingdom—together account for roughly 40% of everyone living on the continent.
The countries of Europe use 21 different official currencies and recognise 43 languages between them; the most widely shared is the Euro (EUR, €), official in 25 of them. At the smaller end of the scale, the three least populous countries are Vatican City, San Marino and Monaco.
